Money and the Winter Olympics

Sunday January 1, 2006
According to the Torino 2006 Blog, the budget for the winter games is about 64 million euros in the red so the Italian government has agreed to hold a lottery for up to 24 milliion euros. The region of Piedmont and the province and city of Turin will be responsible for coming up with the 40 million euros still needed to run the Olympics.

Speaking of money, just how much does it cost to attend an Olympic event? Some events, like curling, hockey, and cross country skiing start as low as 20 euros (about $25) for a single event ticket. On the upper end, some tickets for figure skating and hockey could run over 300 euros. If you're interested in tickets, check the CoSport website. They have some accommodations available, too, but if you're going and haven't booked yet, lodging will be hard to find and pricey!

Of course, since we're in Italy we have to talk about food! Piedmont is a region known for its outstanding cuisine and wine. If you're interested in getting to know more about Piedmont's food while you're there, Mama Margaret and Friends will be running "Barolo Wine and Cooking Tours" with Olympic package tours or ski package tours. They will also offer wine and food tours before and after the games. Mama Margaret has information about the tours and some good information about the Olympics on her Turin 2006 Winter Olympics page.
