Domus Aurea, Nero's Golden House, Closed to the Public
Thursday January 5, 2006
Nero's Golden House in Rome, the Domus Aurea, has once again been closed to the public due to heavy rain and flooding. The house of the decadent Emperor Nero was buried in the first century AD. It was excavated and part of it opened to the public in 1999. With the aid of a rented palm pilot, visitors to the underground house could enhance their visit with close-ups of ceiling frescoes and computer re-creations of several rooms. The Domus Aurea website has some interesting pictures and history and will keep you updated on the reopening of the house. In the meantime, there are many other interesting ancient sites to visit in Rome. Also of interest, the Europe for Visitors guide has Things to Do in Rome for Free.
