Venice News - St. Mark's Square
Wednesday March 15, 2006
Any trip to Venice would not be complete without a visit to St. Mark's Square, a beautiful and lively square and the most visited area of Venice. The famous Campanile towering over St. Mark's Square will undergo restoration work starting in June. The tower's base has become unstable and will be secured by a net of titanium bars to prevent collapse or further damage. The original Campanile collapsed in 1902 and an international effort was made to rebuild it. Inside St. Mark's Basilica, the Venice Foundation plans to restore the Wings of the Angels mosaic, a valuable thirteenth century art work. It has suffered damage mainly because of the high tides that sometimes flood the square. Things to see around St. Mark's Square include St. Mark's Basilica, the Campanile, the impressive Doge's Palace, the Grand Canal, and chic cafes and shops.
