Rome Hotel and Restaurant Reviews

Friday April 7, 2006
When I travel by train, I usually look for a hotel near the train station so I can stash my bags and then walk unencumbered to the central sights. In Rome, finding a good but reasonably priced hotel is sometimes difficult. I was happy to discover the Hotel and Hostel des Artistes, just a few blocks from Termini Station, Rome's main station, but on a fairly quiet street. At the des Artistes, you will find both a comfortable 3-star hotel and shared hostel accommodations on separate floors. Read my review of Hotel des Artistes. If you're looking for a Rome hostel, the Student Travel guide has a list of the Top Rome Hostels.

Also during my last travels in Rome, I was fortunate enough to finally eat at Checchino dal 1887, a restaurant serving traditional Roman food. It's well worth the trip to the Testaccio district. Take a look at my review of Checchino dal 1887. I have more lodging and restaurant recommendations in my Rome 3-day Itinerary.

While in Rome you'll also want to enjoy some cafes. Joe Wolff has 20 excellent recommendations in his book, Cafe Life Rome (compare prices). Joe tells you where to go to enjoy some of Rome's traditional cafes and avoid being overcharged in a tourist cafe. He also tells you a little about the neighborhood for each cafe and the book includes some beautiful pictures, many in black and white. Here are more recommendations for Rome Travel Books to help you get the most from your travels in Rome. You'll probably want to try some gelato, Italian ice cream, too. Here's a recommendation for the best place for Gelato in Rome.
