Topless in Tuscany

By June 6, 2006

Follow me on:

Recently we heard from travelinitaly that the folks over at Forbes stopped gawking at the overhead stock market tickers long enough to throw together their picks for the top ten topless beaches of 2006. You might be suprised to know that there's a Tuscan beach among them: Santa Maria at Forte dei Marmi.

Of course, it's not big deal to be topless in Tuscany--or the rest of Italy for that matter--although it's a bigger deal now than it used to be. Nevertheless, you may not be familiar with Tuscany as a beach destination. Let's just say that Italians have been enjoying Tuscan beaches at Versilia for years; Versilia being host to a string of seaside resorts in the shadow of the Apuan Alps, where the best Italian marble comes from.

So why not consider a few vacation days at Tuscan Beaches? Don't know where Versilia is? We have a Versilia Map for you to gaze at, with information on some attractions in the area. Then, just in case you want to check out one of the ten top topless beaches, you'll need to know lots more about Forte dei Marmi, which hosts one of the best fashion markets around. Topless isn't everything, you know.

Hi Martha,
You’re right about going topless being less popular than it was a while back — the early 80s to be exact. It’s also something I don’t really associate with Il Forte, which seems a bit too socially conscious somehow. I did a rundown of Tuscan beaches back when I was writing about Tuscany that your readers might like: http://italianfood.about.com/library/weekly/aa051697.htm.

All best,

Me again. Incidentally, the top picture on the GVT beach page at http://www.italiantourism.com/beaches.html looks like something in northern Sardegna.

Well darn, looks like Martha knows every beach in Italy!

Kyle: have you ever been to Torre del lago?

In Tuscany there are many beatiful beaches on the socalled “Etruscan Coast” too. For example, San Vincenzo (near Livorno) or Baratti…

Kyle, Thanks for adding the link to your beaches article. Actually, I linked to it already on the Verislia Map page.

Are thongs and topless bathing permitted on the italian beaches

Thongs can be worn on Italian beaches (although some private beaches may have their own rules). As mentioned above, topless bathing is not as prominent as it once was. I do occasionally see topless women on beaches, especially more secluded ones.
