Etruscan Tomb Discovered near Rome
Monday June 19, 2006
A tomb raider led police and archaeologists to a tomb in the Lazio region just north of Rome. Archaeologists believe it is the oldest frescoed burial chamber in Europe and that it belonged to an Etruscan warrior prince. The burial chamber, believed to be about 2700 years old, is carved into the hillside by a field in what was part of the ancient city-state of Veii. The red and black frescoes include lions and birds but any objects that were in the tomb have been taken. The tomb is not currently open to the public.
