The World Cup in Rome

Saturday July 8, 2006
We're heading to Rome on Sunday, just in time for the World Cup finals between Italy and France. Rome is getting geared up for the big game with city authorities planning to provide three maxi-screens and 200 chemical toilets at Circo Massimo where more than 200,000 fans are expected. Maxi-screens will also be at Piazza Vittorio and Castel S. Angelo.

Traffic will be banned from Rome's historic center after the game as will be the sale of drinks in cans and bottles during the match and immediately following it. A large police presence will be out in Rome following the game. After Italy's win over Germany on July 4, thousands of people took to the streets and there was a lot of damage.

Outdoor viewing areas for Sunday's game will be set up in most cities in Italy, often in a main piazza. Many bars and restaurants will set up outdoor TVs. Flags are being flown all over Italy in anticipation. The final match of the World Cup starts at 8:00 PM on Sunday.
