Genoa Joins List of UNESCO Sites in Italy

Saturday July 15, 2006
The Renaissance and Baroque Palazzi dei Rolli, Rolli palaces, in Genoa's center have been awarded the title of UNESCO World Heritage Site, bringing Italy's total to 41. About 80 Rolli palaces were built in the 16th century, when Genoa was one of Italy's four great maritime republics, also including Venice, Pisa and Amalfi near Naples. Many of the palaces were restored in a 10-million-euro project when Genoa was named the European Capital of Culture in 2004.

Italy now has more UNESCO World Heritage Sites than any other country in the world. Two years ago Italy overtook Spain in number of World Heritage Sites when Etruscan remains in Tarquinia and Cerveteri in the Northern Lazio Region and Tuscany's Orcia Valley were added to the list.
