Current Airport Security Measures

Friday August 11, 2006
If you're traveling to or from Italy through London, your flight will probably be going today although you may experience delays or a few cancellations of London to US flights. Heavy restrictions for carry-on luggage are still in place for travelers going through London. Passengers cannot carry liquids onto the plane. If you're traveling with a baby, you may be asked to taste the milk or baby food you may be carrying. No electronic items, purses, or hand luggages is being allowed. All items you carry on should be in a plastic bag and will probably be limited to travel documents and passport, small amounts of medication, pocket-size wallet (with money and credit cards), keys, and your glasses. Everything else is required to be in your check-in luggage.

Security has been increased at Italian airports and all hand luggage is being carefully checked but so far Italy is not enforcing the same restrictions as London. If your travel itinerary does not take you through London, your flight will probably not be affected. You should allow extra time at the airport as it may take longer than usual to go through security checks. If you're flying to Italy from the US, you should also allow extra time for security. US airports are not allowing liquids of any kind to be taken on board the airplane and hand luggages is being carefully searched.

If you're flying today or in the near future, you should check with your airline for updates and carry-on item restrictions. Europe for Visitors has web sites for airlines serving Europe.

Liquids are allowed on flights to Europe – all airlines have updated their security pages with the 3 oz limit and how to display. Where did you get your info?

This blog post is from 2006 and the information was current at that time. Yes, you can currently (2008) take 3 oz liquid bottles in one 1-quart baggie.
