October is National Italian American Heritage Month

Sunday October 1, 2006
Michael San Filippo, about's guide to Italian Language, reminds us that in the United States, October is National Italian American Heritage Month. According to Michael, "there are over 26 million Americans of Italian descent in the United States, making them the fifth largest ethnic group. Coinciding with the festivities surrounding Columbus Day, there are events recognizing the many achievements, contributions, and successes of Americans of Italian descent as well as Italians in America." Watch for special Italian events in your city and take a look at Michael's suggestions for celebrating Italian Heritage in the U.S. in his article about National Italian American Heritage Month

If you want to learn more about Italy, check out some of our Books About Italy. Besides guidebooks, we suggest good non-fiction books about life in Italy. Many of the early immigrants came from Tuscany and we have recommendations for Ten Tuscany Books that give the reader an insight into the traditions and beauty of Tuscany. We also have some beautiful Pictures of Italy. Even if you're not planning to travel to Italy, you can still enjoy Italy from the United States.
