New Lava Flows on Italian Island of Stromboli
Two new craters have opened on the volcanic island of Stromboli, north of Sicily (see Sicily map). Stromboli Island, home to about 750 people, has been put on emergency alert, according to BBC News. One of the two new lava streams is already flowing into the sea. Stromboli's last big eruption, in 2002, led to a small tsunami.
You can climb to Stromboli's summit, 924 meters above sea level, if you join a guided tour. Crafty Traveler has an interesting article, Trekking to the Volcano on the island of Stromboli. Or you can take a virtual excursion with Stromboli online.
Last November, nearby Mount Etna erupted, spewing ash 5000 meters into the air. Mount Etna, on Sicily, is Europe's most active volcano. Our cruises guide has pictures of Mount Etna. Learn more about Sicily in our Sicily Profile.
