Italian Diners Going to Prison for Dinner

Sunday May 20, 2007
Diners in Italy are reserving weeks ahead for a chance to dine in an exclusive restaurant inside a top security prison, according to the Age online news. Vegetarian meals are prepared by chefs in the prison and served by prisoners in a candlelit dining room inside the prison near Volterra in Tuscany (see Tuscany Map). Diners must be checked out by security ahead of time and pass through security check points before getting into the restaurant. Check out these pictures of the prison restaurant from the Telegraph.

Prefer to dine in a more traditional setting? Here are some tips for Eating in Italy and a few Italian Restaurant Recommendations.

Yes, I think it is a prison for dangerous prisoners. It’s pretty amazing, that’s for sure. Apparently they’re thinking of trying it at other prisons, too.

Here’s the phone number 055 234 2777 (Italy country code is 39). It looks like they’re only open on Fridays and possibly only one Friday a month.
