Visiting San Gimignano - The City of Beautiful Towers

Thursday September 13, 2007
san gimignano travel pictureSan Gimignano, known as the City of Beautiful Towers, is a classic medieval walled hill town in Tuscany, famous for its 14 surviving medieval towers. San Gimignano's historic center is a UNESCO world heritage site for its architecture. During the middle ages, the town was an important center for trade and for pilgrims travelling to or from Rome on the Via Francigena.

San Gimignano is in the Siena province of Tuscany about 56km from Florence - see our Tuscany Map for location. It's a popular day trip from Florence or Siena, but its best appreciated in the evening after most of the tourists have left. Check our San Gimignano Hotels for suggestions of where to stay including farm stays nearby and bed and breakfast accommodations.

Read about San Gimignano's attractions in our San Gimignano Visitors Guide.
