Skiing and Winter Sports in Italy
When people think of skiing in Italy, they usually think of northern Italy's mountains. Piemonte, home of winter sporting events for the Winter Olympics, or Cervinia, near the Matterhorn, are two of Italy's most popular ski areas. But did you know you can ski in Sicily?
Ski season on Mount Etna, Sicily's volcano, usually runs from November through March. Mount Etna has two ski areas, the southern slope is Rifugio Sapienza and the northern slopes ending in the resort of Linguaglossa. Hotels, instruction, ski lifts, and ski rentals are available in both areas. Mount Etna is a great place for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing as well as downhill skiing. Wouldn't it be a thrill to ski on a volcano?
Read Enrico Forte's excellent blog post about Skiing on Mount Etna. He's got photos, tips for visiting Sicily in winter, and even a YouTube video.
