Coffee Prices in Italian Bars

By February 23, 2008

Follow me on:

italy coffee pictureRome is the most expensive Italian city for having your cappuccino and brioche at a table in a bar, according to Wanted in Rome. The average cost for that breakfast in Rome is euro 4.92 while having just an espresso served to you at a table averages euro 2.35.

How can you save money on your coffee? Sitting at a table in most cities will cost you more than standing at the bar, and sometimes sitting at an outside table will cost even more. So, that cappuccino and brioche in Rome averages only euro 1.84 or an espresso just .78 if you don't sit down. If you're just getting a quick drink or bite, you can save the table cost by standing like most Italians do. However, if you plan to stay awhile and enjoy the ambiance, paying the table cost is probably worth it.

Another tip for saving money in tourist cities like Rome and Florence is to find a small bar away from the main tourist sights. Walking a few extra blocks may save you some money and you might get to mingle more with the locals. Take a look at our reviews of Cafe Life Rome and Cafe Life Florence, two books by Joe Wolff to help you find that friendly neighborhood bar.

So, why am I going to a bar for coffee in the first place? Read more about the Bar in Italy and don't make the mistake of ordering latte or you may end up with just a glass of milk. Find out how to order the coffee drink you want in Italian Coffee Drinks - How to Order Coffee in Italy.
