Calabria, the Toe of Italy's Boot

Italy Travel Picture saracen tower calabriaToday we're exploring the west coast of the Calabria region.

Calabria, the "toe of the boot" on the map of Italy, is a beautiful region often overlooked by tourists. It's narrow and almost completely surrounded by the sea. In Calabria, you're never far from the coast where you'll find fishing villages, beaches, and great seafood as well as over 100 towers like the one in the picture.

For more about the fascinating region of Calabria, see our Calabria Map and Travel Essentials and our Calabria Travel Directory. Also check out Bleeding Espresso, a blog and site written by an American living in Calabria.

One memorable night, we found a hotel in Stilo, in the hills above Calabria’s east coast beaches. Stilo was deserted in February (I think they opened the hotel for us), but we really enjoyed the town. The highlight was our visit to the Cattolica, a 9th-century Byzantine church above the main town. Tiny, but amazing.

Calabria is a very beautiful region of Italy indeed. We love the areas it is full of natural beauty and historical treasures for example you will discover many ancient ruins and castles from Greek, Norman, Roman and Byzantine times. The rugged coastline is awesome as well with towering cliffs leading down to beautiful sandy beaches and nice turquoise warm waters. It is mostly an unspoilt and undiscovered region which is partly due to the lack of access up until 2006 when the Lamezia airport grew to international stature in 2006 and started receiving flights from UK international airports. This opened the region up and now Calabria is attracting more and more holiday makers which is having a positive effect of the property market.

Properties were very cheap but as the access and infrastructure has been improved and the demand is increasing for quality touristic property the markets is now starting to boom
