A Look at Syracuse, Sicily

Sunday May 18, 2008
Syracuse, Siracusa in Italian, is in southeast Sicily and makes a good base for exploring the area. Founded in 733 BC, it was a mighty Greek colony about triple the size of today's city. There are many Greek and Roman sites of interest, including a Greek theater and Roman arena. Ortygia Island, also part of Syracuse, has Greek and Roman ruins a small historic center. The vibrant, modern city of Syracuse is interesting as well.

Find out more about Syracuse with our Syracuse Travel Guide. Nancy Parode, about.com's guide to Senior Travel, has Syracuse pictures of archaeological sites and Ortygia Island.
