Benevento Pictures
Benevento was an important stop on the Appian Way, the ancient Roman road connecting the west and east coasts. After being sacked in 452, it was ruled by the Lombards and Byzantines, and finally by the Pope for 800 years. There's evidence of each occupation in Benevento's monuments and architecture.
In foklore, Benevento is known as the city of witches and is famous for strega (witch) candy and liqueur. Moving into modern times, Benevento is the birthplace of famous sculptor Mimmo Paladino who created an unusual outdoor modern art gallery in the cloister of San Domenico gardens in 1992.

Benevento is a very pleasant place to visit. The Roman arch there is in excellent condition. There are other areas of the city that feature Roman ruins. The locals are friendly and Campanian food is delicious. All good!
