Vatican City Movie Scenes Filmed at Caserta Palace

Wednesday June 25, 2008
Caserta Royal Palace is the location used for filming Angels and Demons scenes that take place in Vatican City. Recently the Vatican denied requests for filming the new movie in Rome churches, St. Peter's Cathedral, or Vatican City (see Rome Churches Off Limits for Angels and Demons). The movie is based on Dan Brown's popular book Angels and Demons (compare prices) and several crucial scenes take place in Vatican City.

Caserta Royal Palace, Reggia di Caserta, is an extravagant 18th century Bourbon palace modeled after Versailles, near Paris. Caserta is northeast of Naples in the Campania region (see Campania Map). James Martin has pictures of Caserta Royal Palace on Europe Travel.

You might recognize the palace from other movies. It was used in Star Wars Episode I (compare prices) and Star Wars Episode II (compare prices) and substituted for Vatican City in Mission Impossible III (compare prices).
