The Palio of Siena
Tomorrow, July 2, is the first race for the palio (palio definition) in Siena. Often referred to as Il Palio, Siena's palio competition is a horse race around the town's large fan-shaped main square, Piazza del Campo.
There are two races for the palio, on July 2 and August 16. Siena is divided into 17 neighborhoods or contrade. Ten of them will compete tomorrow and the rest, along with three chosen from today's competitors, will race in August. Festivities last for four days, starting June 29 and August 13. More about the Palio of Siena.
Siena is a beautiful hill town in the heart of Tuscany (see Tuscany map) and it's one of the Top Places to Visit in Tuscany. Although Siena is very crowded during these festival days, it's an exciting time to visit. Be sure to book a hotel far ahead if you want to spend the night.
