A Visit to Sardinia

Monday July 7, 2008
Kyle Phillips, about.com's guide to Italian Cuisine, recently enjoyed his first visit to Italy's fascinating island of Sardinia, or Sardegna. Kyle stayed at Residence Alba Dorata, on Sardinia's east coast, about 80km from the port town of Olbia (see Sardinia map), which can be reached from the mainland by ferry or plane.

In his newsletter Kyle says, "Alba Dorata is a pleasant, and also quite reasonable resort. You will need a car to get around, but it is a good base for exploring the east coast. This was our first time in Sardegna and we really weren't prepared -- not tan yet, and didn't bring the hiking shoes necessary to reach some of the coves. But we'll be back (well tanned and with mask & fins too)."

Southwest of Kyle's hotel is the Barbagia region town of Orgosolo famous for its murals. Also in the Barbagia region is my favorite place to stay in Sardinia, Hotel Su Gologone.

Sardinia is a great place for summer festivals. Traditional Sardinian dress (see photos) and dances are often a part of festivals. If you ever visit in July, be sure to see L'Ardia di San Costantino, a very unusual horse race.
