Transport Strikes in Italy - Il Sciopero

Monday July 7, 2008
Nationwide transport strikes were called for today but labor unions say commuter trains will run during morning and evening rush hours, according to Yahoo! News. Most city buses and subways will also run during rush hour but you can expect them to have long lines and big crowds.

More strikes are planned for later in the month, including strikes by airport workers, according to Reuters.

If you're traveling in Italy, try to avoid traveling during scioperi, strikes. How will you know when there's going to be a strike? Find out in Sciopero in Italy - What is a Sciopero?

Il Sciopero can be a good thing, too. Once we were getting off the autostrada after a long drive and the ticket takers were on strike - so our entire day of driving was free.

(1) Nancy says:

Ever since my first European adventures, I’ve learned the word for “strike” in the language of the country I plan to visit. (I got in free to some art museums in Paris, thanks to a strike…”grève” in French.)

Summer travelers to Italy should beware of strikes around August 15, the date the entire country goes on summer vacation. That’s a classic time for labor unions to declare strikes.
