Pietrasanta, Tuscan City of Artists

Sunday August 17, 2008
Pietrasanta, a historic and artistic town in northern Tuscany, is sometimes called the City of the Artists. Since Michaelangelo came here for his marble, it's been a favorite place of marble workers and artists. Several international artists live here and there are art studios, shops, and exhibits in town.

Unlike some of the other popular towns in Tuscany, Pietrasanta isn't a hill town. Its compact pedestrian center is a good place for walking and the lively Piazza del Duomo is a good place to enjoy a drink at a cafe.

Pietrasanta is just 3km inland near the beach towns of Forte dei Marmi and Viareggio. There's even a bike path from town to the seaside. Pietrasanta makes a good base for visiting Pisa, Tuscany's Versilia coast, and the Carrara Marble Quarries.

Take a look at our Pietrasanta Travel Guide and find Pietrasanta's location on our Tuscany Rail Map.
