Italian gas prices are falling too, having dropped 13 cents from the peak in July, according to Italy-News. In Tuscany I'm currently seeing diesel prices of 1.36 - 1.40 euro per liter with gas prices about 8 cents higher (equivalent to about $8 per gallon). For more about gas prices, see Gas Prices in Europe.
When I'm traveling in Italy, I always try to get a diesel car. Not only does diesel cost less than gas, but diesel cars get better mileage, too. I'm driving a Renault Clio diesel that I leased through the Renault Eurodrive Lease Buy-back program.
Now may be the time to take a quick look at Italy and start planning your Italy vacation. If you need more incentive, here are 12 films to get you in the mood for an Italian Vacation.

Italy in May 2008 was MOLTO CARO for the American spending dollars. I knew the dollar would rise after I got home! We also drove a diesel while in Italy; a Ford S Max which was a delight to drive and very stingy on gas usage.
One way to save money in Italy and see the best of this wonderful country is to home-base yourself in one area and take daytrips to all the local attractions. While you won’t see 10 countries in 20 days if you travel this way, you’ll really get to know one special area of Italy. If you cook for yourself, you’ll save even more, and have the fun of exploring Italian grocery stores (yum!).
I agree with Nancy. We found a comfortable country house near Borgo a Mozzano and Diecimo north of Lucca and will stay there for the month of October. And we always use the Peugeot buy-back plan. We really like having our own home base and car and have been traveling throughout Europe like this for over 10 years. It is more economical and satisfying for us and our friends. Thanks for the info on sagre – now I understand those little signs near towns and villages.
Barbara, That area is very beautiful and October should be a great time to go!

I have a question about short term internet access in the Lucca region. We will be there a month and need daily access because of our business. The owner of the country house (near Borgo a Mozzano) apparently has taken out their internet access service. I wondered if you knew a way for us to rent or buy a package when there is no phone in the house. And how is the reception? We will have a cell phone with a SIM card. I have searched and searched for an answer to this question.
Barbara, more people will see your question if you post it on the forum. Reception varies from place to place so it’s hard to say how the reception will be. What kind of internet did the owner have?
Gas prices seem to be stable but the dollar value is continuing to improve. Yesterday the exchange rate was $1.35 to one euro. I agree with Nancy and Barbara that a good way to save money and experience Italian life is to stay in a vacation home or agriturismo.
