Venice's Grand Canal, its main thoroughfare, snakes through the middle of the city. Until now, there were only three bridges crossing the Grand Canal - the Rialto (the oldest), Accademia, and Scalzi Bridges. Venice's fourth bridge, the new Ponte della Costituzione (Bridge of the Constitution), now links Piazzale Roma ((Venice's bus and car terminus) and the Santa Croce neighborhood with the Santa Lucia railway station and Cannaregio neighborhood (see Venice Sestiere map). Unlike Venice's historic bridges, this bridge has a more contemporary look, but it cost lots more than anticipated to build. (photo)
A trip down the Grand Canal, lined with beautiful buildings, is a must for the traveler to Venice. In the evening after dark it's especially romantic to take the number 1 vaporetto when the lights are on and there are fewer tourists. (see Venice Vaporetto Information).
