When to Visit the Vatican Museums

Monday November 17, 2008
Betsy Malloy, our guide to California Travel, just returned from Rome and passed along this tip. Betsy's friend Carla, a Vatican tour guide, says that the best time to visit the Vatican Museum is on Wednesday morning during the Pope's weekly general audience. While many people are at the Papal audience, few people are in line for the museum. Tuesdays and Thursdays are the worst days for visiting the Vatican Museums because big crowds come in off the cruise ships.

This is partially true, but cruiseships can come in any time of the week. By far the worst day to visit the Vatican Museums is Monday since the museums are closed on Sundays. The best days to visit are Tuesday, Thursday, Friday or Saturday after 1:30pm. Wednesdays IF there is a papal audience go at 9:30am. Mondays, any day after the museums are closed for a holiday, Easter week, All Saints Day Week- avoid completely if at all possible!!!
