Obama Popular Figure for Naples Nativity Scenes

Thursday December 4, 2008
Nativity scenes, or presepi are a major Italian Christmas tradition. Many families set up elaborate nativity scenes that often include parts of their town, local people, and popular figures. One of the best places to buy nativity figurines is Via San Gregorio Armeno in Naples, often referred to as the street of nativity workshops (see pictures). This year, Barack Obama is turning out to be one of the most sought after presepe statuettes, according to ANSA.

During December many vendors, dressed in traditional shepherd costume, hold a Christmas market at one end of the street. This year police tried to shut them down but Via San Gregorio Armeno businesses also closed up shop yesterday in support of the stall-keepers. The situation was resolved by evening and shops and market stalls are back in business, once again making Naples one of the top cities in Italy for pre-Christmas shopping.

Find out more about the tradition of Italian Nativity Scenes and where to see some of the best presepi.. If you're interested in visiting Naples, take a look at our Naples Travel Guide.
