New Year's Eve in Bologna

Bologna, a beautiful city in northern Italy, celebrates New Year's Eve or La Festa di San Silvestro with the Fat Ox Fair, Fiera del Bue Grasso. Paola, from Bologna, says

La fiera del bue grasso maybe was an ancient one in the countryside. For many years in the town of Bologna we have celebrated the burning of the Vecchione. In Piazza Maggiore a big straw figure, representing the closing year, is set up and put on fire at midnight. A lot of people gather there to look at the show.
