La Befana Festival in Urbania

Saturday January 3, 2009
Italy Travel Picture of UrbaniaAlthough La Befana delivers gifts all over Italy the night of Januray 5, Urbania holds big a five day festival in her honor January 2-6. Urbania, a medieval town in central Italy's Le Marche region, is not only a top place to see La Befana but it's also a great place to visit. Urbania is fairly flat and easy to walk around. It's lively piazza, friendly people, and good restaurants make it a good base for exploring the region.

Urbania has been an important center of handmade Italian ceramics since the 15th century and there are still several ceramics workshops. There's an Italian language school, the ducal palace and museum, and the unusual Chiesa dei Morti or Church of the Dead. The relaxing Country House Parco Ducale, just outside town, is a great place to stay.
