Touring Italy by Boat

By , About.com GuideJanuary 19, 2009

Follow me on:

Italy's Mediterranean coast is dotted with small picturesque islands and the best way to explore them is from the sea. Here are a couple interesting tours by boat.

Palio Tours is offering 15% off on their sailing vacations, exploring islands off the coast of Tuscany, Sardinia, or Sicily. Sailboats come with a skipper, on-board meals, and a complete itinerary.

Kayaking off the coast of Elba Island in Tuscany is another great sea touring option. Barbara Kossy, along with Sea Kayak Italy, runs kayaking trips each September, with participants staying in hotels on Elba, the island where Napoleon was exiled. Take a look at her photos from the 2008 Elba Island Kayak trip where you'll also find plans for 2009.

In case you are interested n boat tours in Venice, I have special one on a typical venitian boat called Bragozzo.
http://www.romanticatours.com/boat_tours

Venice, a city with seafaring traditions, is part of its lagoon; visit on a Bragozzo one of the most unique environments of the world where you can see wonderful islands, small fishermen villages and fill your eyes with charming landscapes.
Live these places sailing “al terzo” the tipical venetian sail, respecting the enviroment in total relax. Get on a Bragozzo, a boat that for centuries has sailed the merchant courses in the northern Adriatic sea and is part of the history of Venice.
Thanks to the flat bottom these boats can sail on shallow water and navigate through landscapes that cannot be discovered by common boats.

The Bragozzo is a typical venetian boat and now you have the opportunity to enjoy a unique sailing tour of the lagoon on board on this special vessel.
Each bragozzo is 8.5 meter long (25ft) and 2 meter large (7 ft) and can comfortably accommodate up to 8 passengers.

In a one day trip: you will visit most of the beauties of our lagoon and relaxing in the sun, tasting our “cichetti” (not included) refreshed by the wind passing trough the sails.

Some destinations visited in the venetian lagoon:

- Island tour of Murano, Burano, Torcello
- Visit of Chioggia: Known as “the small Venice” its history is lost in time.
- Visit of San Lazzaro degli Armeni: One of the first center in the world of Armenian Culture. Unique!
- Poveglia: An island that is now unihabited but so important in the history in Venice.
- Pellestrina: A small enchanting island of fishermen. Some of the best fish restaurant in Italy are here!
- Forte Sant’Andrea: The ancient defensive line of the Venetian Republic.
- Sant’Erasmo: The garden of Venice. For relax and meditation…and excellent food!
