Walking on the Walls of Lucca

Monday April 20, 2009
lucca travel pictureLucca, one of the top places to visit in Tuscany, is one of my favorites and one of the few towns that's flat, not a hill town. Lucca's walls surrounding the historic center are some of Italy's best preserved ramparts. The top of the walls has been turned into a tree-lined path, making a good vantage point for viewing the tops of Lucca's churches, towers, and monuments.

Take a look at Lucca's ramparts, the San Pietro gate, and views from the ramparts with our Lucca Walls Pictures. Another good view spot is the top of Guinigi Tower - here's a bird's eye view of Lucca from the tower.

Ciao Martha; Beautiful photos. There are a couple of places I regret not having seen during our trips to Italy and Lucca is one of them. I am curious about the Duomo di San Martino. Was the upper portion of the bell tower rebuilt? or are they just cleaning it?

I think they were just cleaning it. It’s too bad you missed Lucca but you saw many nice towns. Hopefully you’ll get to Italy again.
