June 2 Holiday in Italy

By , About.com GuideMay 28, 2009

Follow me on:

June 2 is an Italian national holiday for the Festa della Repubblica. Shops and banks will be closed but many towns celebrate the day in 1946 that Italians voted in favor of the republican form of government. I've seen signs for festivals in several towns near us. Rome holds a large parade presided over by Italy's president and military bands play music in the gardens of the Quirinale, open to the public. The Colosseum is usually draped with a big Italian flag, too.

Does this mean the city run museums will also be closed?

I think the national museums are normally open as are the Vatican Museums and major sites. I’m not sure which museums are city run. Did you have a specific museum in mind?

I had read or heard that the museums in Venice would be closed on June 2nd and that the Vatican Museum and Sistine Chapel are closed on Sundays. Is this correct?

Here is visiting information for the Vatican Museums. The Sistine Chapel is part of the Vatican Museums visit.

Venice is hosting the Palio of the Four Ancient Maritime Republics in early June this year so it’s possible that some sites and museums might be closed on June 2 although I haven’t heard that. Here are top Venice museums with links to visiting information. I don’t see any that say they are closed June 2 as of now.
