There's lots more to northern Italy's Veneto region than just Venice. Bassano del Grappa, on the Brenta River, is one of Italy's prettiest towns. Near Bassano del Grappa are charming medieval towns and castles, Venetian villas built by famous Renaissance architect Palladio, and grappa distilleries where you can taste and buy grappa. Since most tourists in this area head only to Venice, there are fewer tourists and it's likely you'll find prices lower, too.
Bassano del Grappa makes a great base for visiting the Veneto region. You can even take a day trip to Venice by train.

This is a lovely little town full of stunning architecture and the local people are very friendly. Its the perfect place to retire to if like a calm and relaxed environment but with the convenience of shops etc.
