You've probably never heard of Bagnone, Italy, but the tiny Tuscan town has become popular in the last few days. The winner of the huge Italian lotto prize, 146.9 million euro, bought the winning ticket in Bagnone (but has not yet claimed the prize).
Where is Bagnone? Bagnone, a pretty village built along the side of a river and topped by a castle, is in northern Tuscany's off-the-beaten-track Lunigiana region (see Lunigiana map on Europe Travel). More than 100 castles dot the hilly Lunigiana landscape, a popular area for hiking, and there are quiet medieval villages that see few tourists. Europe Travel has a few Bagnone Pictures showing the castle and bridge over the river and you can see a larger photo on Wandering Italy blog.
