October is the time of chestnut (castagne) and mushroom (funghi) festivals in Italy. Many small towns hold food festivals on the weekends, look for a sign announcing a sagra (see sagra definition), where you'll usually find good local food at budget prices. Today I saw sagra di castagne signs for festivals in several villages near us. Some truffle fairs start in October, too. If you prefer sweeter foods, head to Perugia for Eurochocolate, a chocolate lover's paradise, or Cremona for the Torrone festival.
