Rome's Piazza NavonaThe piazza or public square is the center of life in Italy. Rome has many lively squares with beautiful fountains or statues but there are several that stand out as must-see sights. Melanie Renzulli has put together a list of the top public squares in Rome that includes public transportation information for each of them.

Piazza Navona is truly a must see when in Rome. Not only is it laden with history and art(like everything else in Italy) but within close walking distance of many other places of interest; the Pantheon, Fontana di Trevi, the Vatican/Piazza di San Pietro, The Tiber river (dirty and beautiful at the same time). Oh, and if you go to Piazza Navona be sure to mangia at the Tre Scalini Ristorante. While it is surely a tourist venue, the food, ambiance if you sitting under the umbrella outside, and atmosphere is wonderful.

Tre Scalini is the place to eat the famous Tartufo dessert, I’ve gone a couple of times for tartufo (but never eaten there). It’s pretty pricey to sit at the table but worth it for the great view.

Yes, Piazza Navona is very close to many top sights. I like to stay by Piazza Farnese, a short walk from Piazza Navona and convenient to all the things Pensionato mentions.
