This photo was taken on the Salento Peninsula of the Puglia region in spring. Puglia, the heel of the boot, has some of Italy's most beautiful coastline with good beaches and clear water for swimming.

Puglia does have some great beaches. It also has castles, pilgrimage sites, churches, the unusual trulli and excellent food. I highly recommend a visit to this region of Italy.
Puglia also has horrible roads and very ugly towns built beside factories – be selective about where you go.
