Italy's Abruzzo Region, Setting for the American

By September 6, 2010

Follow me on:

George Clooney stars in the recently released movie, the American (more), much of which was shot on location in central Italy's Abruzzo region. If you've never heard of the Abruzzo, you're probably not alone as it's a fairly remote region often overlooked by tourists. The Abruzzo is a mountainous region with stunning natural scenery dotted with medieval castles and picturesque villages steeped in tradition. Here's more about the Abruzzo region.

So, where is the Abruzzo? The region is about 100 miles east of Rome and stretches to the Adriatic coast. Much of the interior is parkland as you can see in our Abruzzo Map. Read more about the Abruzzo from people who live there: Flavors of Abruzzo | So This is Life

thank you for helping put Abruzzo on the map! :) I also wanted to add…

Abruzzo has beautiful, ancient hill towns rivaling those of Umbria and Tuscany and has won 19 “Borghi Piu Belli d’Italia” awards (The Most Beautiful Villages in Italy) which has one of the most of these awards in all of Italy.

Abruzzo is also known as the “Green Region of Europe” and “Italy’s Garden” as it offers Europe’s most visually beautiful natural parks: Parco Nazionale della Majella; Parco Nazionale d’Abruzzo; Parco Nazionale del Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga; Pietracamela, Italia and Parco Naturale Regionale Sirente Velino.

It also boasts some of the highest number of “Bandiere Blu Spiaggie” (Blue Flag beaches) on its Adriatic Coast in all of Italy.

all the best!

I was born in Abruzzo (Casalbordino) and go back often to visit family and friends. I have a blog where I write about my childhood memories and food from Abruzzo.
