We're just back from exploring the Gargano promontory, an interesting part of the Puglia region that's often overlooked by tourists. While Puglia is referred to as the heel of the boot, Gargano is the spur, the northeast part of Puglia that juts out into the sea (see Puglia map).
The Gargano offers a diverse environment with sandy beaches, a forest with hiking trails and 80 species of wild orchids, picturesque medieval villages, castles, and important religious sanctuaries. There was much more to see and do than I had expected. Here's a look at where to go in Gargano.
