Genoa is a city often overlooked by travelers but well worth a visit. In the past decade Genoa has been spruced up quite a bit and now has a nice port area and a UNESCO World Heritage site, its 16th century Renaissance and Baroque palaces, i Palazzi dei Rolli. Several of the palazzi, including the stunning Palazzo Reale, are now museums. For a bird's eye view of Genoa you can go up above the port in the Bigo, a panoramic capsule (photos and information), or take the public elevator up to Piazza Castello. Genoa also makes an excellent base for visiting the Italian Riviera.

Genoa is a big city. If you are arriving by rail you can detrain above the city and wend you way down the steep streets to the port area and other highlights. As mentioned there are many very interesting places to visit while there; Duomo San Lorenzo, the Doges Palace (the Garibaldi and Andrea Doria families were highly influential in Genoa), the old portal of the city which is near the birthplace of Christopher Columbus. While down at the port area visit the huge aquarium at dockside.
The Genoa Principe train station is currently closed so you will likely get off at Genoa Brignole, about a 15-20 minute walk to the old town.
We were in Genoa in May & they were already working on the station. Do you have any idea when it will reopen? It is hard to imagine the entire station being closed.
Grazie,
I just did a search on trenitalia.com & it showed trains from Genova PP ???
Where did you see or read it was closed?
I saw the station a couple weeks ago and it was closed. Since it is back on the trenitalia schedule, I assume it has re-opened.
