While popular Cinque Terre hiking trails remain closed at the beginning of 2012 (as well as the villages of Monterosso and Vernazza) due to last year's floods, there are still good hikes you can take in the area. Recently a reader commented:
Even though 4 of the coastal trails are currently closed, you can still access some good walking trails. We took red trail no# 6 from Manarola to Volastra and on to Corniglia. The trail takes you up into the hills and through the grape vines and is totally stunning. We had the trail to ourselves and it took us 2.5 hrs with a few stops.
See Cinque Terre hiking map for a look at the red and blue trails and Monternero to Volastra and Corniglia for more about this trail. The short Via dell'Amore remains open between Riomaggiore and Manarola (check National Park web site for updates about closures) and even checking out the tunnels can be interesting, like this tiled wall in Riomaggiore shown in the photo, submitted by Lynette Duncan and used with permission.
