Montecatini Terme, in the heart of northern Tuscany, is one of Italy's top spa towns and its thermal spring waters have been known for curative powers since pre-Roman days. Designed to create a relaxing atmosphere and promote wellness, the town is a good summer destination because of its tree-lined streets and shady park as well as summer concerts in the spas. Some of the spas, such as the lavish Liberty-style Terme Tettuccio, are only open from May to September. Terme Tettuccio is a classic spa from bygone days where people go to take the waters and relieve stress by relaxing but there are other spas in town with modern wellness and beauty treatments.
Visitors can also take the historic funicular railway up the hill to visit Montecatini Alto, a small hill town with castle remains and great views. Because its connected by train and has many affordable hotels, Montecatini makes a good base for visiting nearby Tuscany favorites such as Florence, Lucca, or Viareggio on the coast.
