While Florence is one of the top cities to visit in Italy, it can also be crowded and hot in summer. For those traveling with a car, it may be more convenient to stay outside the city, especially if you want to take day trips from Florence by car. There are many places to stay outside the city with easy access to Florence. Here are links to reviews of three good places I've stayed, all with free parking and swimming pools:
- Villa le Piazzole is in the hills above Florence. With a pleasant 40 minute walk you arrive at Ponte Vecchio in the heart of Florence. A taxi is recommended for the return uphill.
- Villa Mangiacane offers luxurious lodging in a restored 15th century villa, 7 kilometers from Florence. From the back terrace there's a view of the Duomo Dome. There is a shuttle available to Florence or bus from a nearby location.
- Le Torri Holiday Apartments offer a more economical choice for those planning a one-week stay. The restored medieval farmhouse is in the Florentine Hills of Chianti, 25 kilometers south of Florence, and a daily bus to and from Florence stops across the street.
There are also many good agriturismo choices in the Tuscan countryside. For those who prefer to stay in Florence, here are top-rated Florence Hotels.
