American writer Gore Vidal, who passed away on July 31, had owned a fabulous villa on Italy's stunning Amalfi Coast until he sold it in 2006. His villa, La Rondinaia, was built into the cliffs in the village of Ravello - see our Amalfi Coast map for Ravello's location. Find out more about the villa in this post from Dream of Italy.

The Amalfi Coast is one of Italy's most scenic stretches of coast line with huge cliffs towering above the sea. It's also one of the top places to go in Italy so be sure to plan ahead for a visit, especially in summer. Check these top-rated Amalfi Coast hotels for places to stay. The top town to visit is the picturesque Positano, a charming town that climbs up the cliff from the sea as you can see in these Positano photos. Another nice town is the historic town of Amalfi itself, a peaceful resort town with good beaches, an interesting historic center, and an impressive cathedral (see Amalfi photos).
