The cathedral, or duomo, of Siena has incredible marble mosaic floors dating from the 14th - 16th centuries, however most of the floor is normally kept covered to protect it from worshipers and visitors as they walk inside. Each year the floor mosaics are put on special display for a short time period and in 2012 they can be seen from August 18 through October 24. If you're in Siena during this time, don't miss the opportunity to visit the Duomo and see the floor's 56 mosaic panels completely unveiled. There is an additional charge for visiting the cathedral during this period. At other times of the year, a few panels are visible and there are many other interesting art works.
