If you're taking a cruise, you'll find that every port is different. Some ports are close to sight-seeing opportunities while others require taking a guided tour or trying to arrange public or private transportation on your own. Mary Jane Cryan, who has lived in Italy for 50 years and gives talks on cruise ships, offers these Money-Saving Tips for 10 Mediterranean Cruise Ports, including 8 in Italy.

Note that the bus and train pass mentioned in her tip for saving money in Civitavecchia is good only on regional trains (not the IC or Freccia trains). It's a great deal if you want to try traveling on your own to Rome or elsewhere nearby on your day in Civitavecchia.
