Fall is truffle time and central Italy's Marche region is one of the best places to go for truffle fairs. Last month I visited the Sant'Angelo in Vado Truffle Fair and had an amazing truffle dinner while I was a guest at Palazzo Donati, an old family palazzo, or mansion, available for rent right on the main square of Mercatello sul Metauro near Urbania. Although truffles are the star of fall foods, you'll find other culinary delights in this part of le Marche including olive oil, fossa cheese, fresh casciotta cheese, and the famous prosciutto of Carpegna.
The southern part of the region near Fermo and Ascoli Piceno is known for its black truffles, found mainly in winter. If you'd like to try your hand at finding black truffles, you can spend a day in a truffle reserve, best done from December - March. Of course you will also get to taste the valuable black truffles in several delicious dishes. See Discovering the Truffle on Loving Marche for information and booking.
