Fall is the perfect time to visit the Langhe wine region of Piedmont in northern Italy. The colors are spectacular and the fall truffle meals are fantastic, too. Some of Italy's top red wines are produced in the Langhe including Barolo, Barbera, and Barbaresco. Langhe's rolling hills are dotted with vineyards and picturesque hill top villages and it's a prime area for truffles.

We stayed at Tra Arte e Querce, in the pretty village of Monchiero, and had a delicious truffle dinner. In Barbaresco we stayed at Casa Boffa near the Barbaresco Enoteca, where you can taste wines in a former church.

For a guided visit with truffle hunt and wine tasting, see Select Italy's Wine and Truffles Excursion or their Barolo Tour, a day of winery and castle visits.
