It's Carnival Time in Venice

If you're in Venice in the next few weeks you may see people dressed in costume or wearing masks strolling through the city. Although the date of carnival, carnevale in Italian, is February 12, Venice carnival started January 26 with a water parade and concert - see a video on the Telegraph. Italy's best-known carnevale is in Venice but there are many others - see Italian Carnevale Festivals.
