Today was the first running of the famous Palio of Siena horse race that's held in Siena's main square, il Campo. Siena's palio contest takes place twice a year with ten neighborhoods, or contrade, competing in each. The winner of the July 2 race was the Goose, Oca, contrada.
The second race is August 16. If you'd like to see the race, you can either stand in the middle of the crowded piazza (get there early) or you can buy tickets ahead of time. One place to buy reserved grandstand or balcony tickets is through our affiliate, Select Italy - see Siena Palio for prices and photos or consider a 3-night package that includes a pre-race neighborhood dinner and visit to a contrada museum.
